Doctor of Physical Therapy is not a new profession, some sort of physical therapy practice
even existed in Europe from 1500 to 1700s .Physical Therapy profession is part of modern
medical system which is developed by the father of western medicine Hippocrates. In
developed world Physical therapy education is advanced up to doctorate level. With growth in
number of medical institutions comes a greater responsibility of producing high quality, skilled
and dynamic physical therapists that would compete at international levels. Independent
Medical College, Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences utilize multi-disciplanary approach to
overcome various challenges of disabling injury, illness & age related health conditions in order
to spend a more active, healthier and dependency free life. The institute is comprised of
academic department and a well equipped tertiary care hospital with outdoor as well as indoor

Physical Therapy is a health care profession concerned with human function and movement
and maximizing physical potential. It is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of
life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention,
treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation. Physical Therapists (PTs) work within
a wide variety of health settings to improve a broad range of physical problems associated
with different 'systems' of the body. Because the body of knowledge of physiotherapy is quite
large, PTs tend to specialize in a specific clinical areas. These include: Orthopedic manual
therapy, Cardiopulmonary, Neurology ,Pediatrics, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Older
People / Geriatrics Pain management, Women's Health ,Oncology, and Extended Scope in
Public Health.
THE PURPOSE OF THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAM (DPT) IS TO
PREPARE PHYSICAL THERAPISTS WHO WILL:
Be primary providers of physical therapy care.
Serve as responsible members in the professional community and are willing and able to
assume leadership roles in the communities they serve
Admission policy/ criteria for candidates
The criteria for admission in the program DPT would be:
At least 60 % marks (in aggregate) in F.Sc.(Pre Medical) /Equivalent as certified by the Inter
Board Committee of Chairmen (IBBC)
